Rental FAQ

Renting books offers significant savings over buying textbooks that you do not want to keep.  Books can be rented for one approximately semester with the option of a single ten day rental extension. Before checking out, please make sure the due date will work for you. The due date is displayed on the product page and in the shopping cart.

If you need your book for longer than originally rented, you may extend your rental period.  Log in to your customer account and view your rental order.  For each title that requires additional days, click the link that reads “Extend” to increase the rental period for a fee of $9.99.

Renting books

To rent a book, make sure to select the “Rent” option underneath the “Buy” section on the right side of the product page.  Continue shopping for additional items to buy or rent, or follow through the rest of the checkout process to complete your rental.  

Books available for renting

Nearly all books are available for renting. However, study guides, workbooks, lab manuals, and books of this nature are considered one time use items and are only available for sale.

Payment options

Because of the nature of rentals, a valid credit card must be associated with the order. While Store Credit can be applied to the rental transaction, Store Credit cannot be applied to the buyout of an item.

Sales tax

Sales tax applies to all rentals.

Tracking your rental shipment

Your tracking number will be Emailed to you as soon as the package leaves our warehouse. Tracking information is also available in your account.

Returning your order for a refund

If you need to return an item because your class was canceled, the wrong book was ordered, or for any other reason, you are welcome to do so within 14 days of delivery for a refund of item cost. All software must be returned unopened. We do not issue a pre-paid shipping label for rentals being returned for a refund, and you will not receive a refund of the original shipping charges. All software must be returned unopened. Packages postmarked more than 14 days after delivery are considered to be returns of your rental before the due date. No money is refunded for the return of a rental once 14 days from delivery have passed.

Damaged or lost books

Books must be returned in similar condition to when they were mailed. We request that highlighting or underlining is limited to keep the item in good, usable condition. Books that are heavily marked or otherwise damaged will not be accepted and you will be charged the full retail price of the item less the rental deposit. Should you lose the book, you will be charged the full retail price + tax less the rental deposit.

Extensions

You can extend the rental period at any time for 10 days for $9.99 + tax. Simply log in to your account, view your rental order, and select “Extend.” You may opt for an extension at any time during your rental period, however please note that rentals can only be extended once. Your new due date will be sent to you via Email and updated on your order page. Rentals are extended 10 days from your original due date, not 10 days from the date the extension is purchased.

Extending one item does not extend all items on a rental order. Make sure to extend the rental period for each item that you need to keep longer than originally planned.

Returning your rental by the due date

Your due date is listed in your order confirmation and is also available in your customer account. A pre-paid FedEx return label will be automatically generated and Emailed to you one week before your due date. If you would like to return your rental early, you may log in and create a return label at any time. You may also create additional labels as necessary in your customer account. Make sure to review our packaging guidelines for tips on safe packaging. Please remember, when a book is rented, the rental price paid is only a percentage of the list price. When you return your rental, no money is refunded.

The term ‘postmarked’ means the date that the carrier website shows the item as being received. An item left in a drop box or even at a third-party location may be delayed in processing, so please allow enough time prior to the due date for the item to be processed.

Failure to return your rental

If your books are not postmarked by the due date, you will be charged a $9.99 extension fee + tax which extends your due date by 10 days. If your rental is not returned by the new due date, it will be automatically converted into a sale. You will be charged 125% of list price + tax less the fee paid for each item not returned. Available store credit will be utilized and the remaining cost will be charged to the credit card on file. This is not reversible. Please do not return any items that have converted into a sale as you will not receive a refund and the item will not be returned to you.

Converting your rental to a purchase

If you would like to keep your book, you may convert your rental to a purchase at anytime prior to your due date in your customer account. When purchasing a rented item, you will be charged the list price minus the rental deposit and any extensions purchased.
